DAY 30 APRIL 23

HOME!!!

We are back!!! Wow! We arrived home around 10pm Tuesday evening to find kind gestures of balloons pictures plants and a big garage door banner saying "Welcome Back Cberts"

I woke up early Tuesday. I showered and was able to get a new bandage on my neck from where the catheter was removed.

The nurse gave me a couple shots. I then got dressed and organized all my belongings. Dr. Fedorenko stopped by for one last hug and to say goodbye. I love him!

Anastasia the office manager was able to get me some oatmeal and I had a banana and some beef sticks for breakfast. Delicious!

Lynnette, in the mean time, was coming over from the Vega hotel. Anastasia had to change up things at the last minute and arrange a taxi to pick up Lynnette and bring her over to the hospital.

Apparently deodorant was not used by the driver! Fortunately Lynnette only had to endure 20 minutes of that.

At 830am we got in an extremely comfortable minivan and drove out to DME airport for our departure. Moscow traffic is big city traffic! Lots of congestion. It took us about one and a half hours to get to the airport.

We arrived with plenty of time. We were able to check all three of our bags. Convenient!

We then departed on Lufthansa flight 2527 from DME to Munich, Germany. A three hour flight.

We then transferred over to the next leg from Munich to San Francisco. It was a scheduled two hour layover but there was an hour delay. Not a big deal. Very clean nice new terminal and waiting area.

Lynnette was able to get our seats moved to a row that had lots of extra legroom. It made the flight! I loved the bathroom arrangement in that airplane too. You went downstairs to an area that had a collection of 5 separate bathroom stalls. Very convenient!

The flight lasted about 12 hours. Got a couple games of Phase 10 in.

Arrived in SFO only 45 minutes behind schedule. Cleared customs collected our bags and Pat and Amy Scott graciously drove down to pick us up! No Uber needed.

Had a great visit with them and that was it! And guess who showed up at our doorstep a few minutes later? Rachel and Josh Seibert!

They have finished their semester and drove home from Provo while we were flying from Munich. How cool is that!

And a final shout out to Ryan Hemming!!! He has been staying at our home while we have been in Russia. He has been checking in with us periodically. He washed our cars and had the house immaculate when we walked in the door!!! Even left those lovely plants as a welcome home! Thank you Ryan!!!

      Welcome back Paul! Glad you’re home. I kind of lost contact with you when I came home last week. Just got caught up in catching up with everything at home here. So how’s it feeling so far? Can you tell any difference yet in your strength or stamina? Too many questions? We just hope it goes as planned for your recovery!

Exited Isolation!!! I am dressed in my favorite clothes. A T-shirt and shorts! Makes me happy! After my morning yoga and breakfast routine I was just sitting in my chair wondering exactly how the day was going to play out. I like to get my bath and new clothes on sooner than later. My favorite nurse who speaks a lot of English was here. I asked her if she knew what was going to happen. She gave me a new Kung Fu suit and said I could change. Standing in my underwear getting ready to bath Anastasia the office manager knocked on the door and said I was officially released from isolation! I could take a real shower and put on normal clothes. Perfect timing! And that was it! Had a very pleasant shower and scrubbed off 9 days of isolation. Actually the vodka bath keeps you very clean. Never smelled. I was able to go out and visit with Katja for a little while. Then had lunch and Lynnette arrived in the early afternoon. Have been able to visit Johan and Pip again. Very nice ...

DAY 1 MARCH 25

Just an update. Here is the attempt!! We flew SFO to Frankfurt to Moscow. United (special shout out to Kim B. from United for giving us exceptional customer service!!!) gave us some sweet seats and that made those 11 hours go much more easily. Transferred to Lufthansa and got to Russia around 5pm Russia time. Short layover. An hour but it was delayed an hour too. A driver (Vadin) was waiting to take us to the hotel. Had wifi in his van. Hotel is about 40 miles from the airport. Very nice hotel. Called the Vega but it is a Best Western chain. Clean and big. Had chicken kiev. Everyone has been super helpful. Not a lot of English speakers though Where we are reminds me of Philadelphia. Industrial big city with similar topography. I report Tuesday 26th at noon local time. Scheduled to come home April 23rd DAY 2 MARCH 26 Same airport driver (Vadin) picked us up at the hotel and took us to the facility/hospital. About 15 minute drive. ...And What is Happening Now?

Here is a post of a woman who is fairly similar to my condition. She has Primary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis and was treated in Russia like me. One of my friends from Russia, Katja (Norway), sent it to me. I think she basically has a year on me because of the time I had to wait while I was treated for the cancer. She is younger than me too. I was 49 years old when I got sick. Her mobility was better than mine going in but I do not have any cognitive issues. I do have the left side weakness like she has though. The clinic in Russia says that the first six months to a year are a roller coaster ride. Dr. Fedorenko emphasized healthy lifestyle, healthy food and exercise as the best sources for a positive outcome. Hopefully this will give everyone an idea of what is the time line I am looking at. I hope my results are as good as hers. And who doesn't love Katy Perry?
